With the world currently safe for anthemic young bands full of floppy-haired boys, traditional emo-popsters Saves the Day are fully in control of their own destiny. Their new one, UNDER THE BOARDS, shows the New Jersey foursome continuing to flirt with pop while still keeping one eye on their emo-punk origins. The album-opening title track begins things quietly, with somber guitars and washes of keys behind singer Chris Conley's high, gentle voice; but "Radio" brings in a more familiar sound, with sparkling riffs crashing around a rousing chorus. "Woe" stomps like a lost track from Weezer's landmark PINKERTON, and "Lonely Nights" shows Saves the Day toying with catchy piano pop. Fans of '90s stalwarts like Lifetime and the Promise Ring lamenting the lack of quality in melodic pop-punk of the early 2000s will want to rush to UNDER THE BOARDS.
