Former Pixies frontman Frank Black has been steadily turning out interesting and often excellent solo albums since the band's dissolution in the early 1990s. SVN FNGRS (2008) continues that holding pattern, and actually weighs in as one of Black's most compelling and consistent albums since TEENAGER OF THE YEAR.
At seven songs and a 20-minute running time, SVN FNGRS is short, but that shouldn't discourage buyers, especially in the face of wildly inventive rockers like "The Seuss" and "I Sent Away," which are more ferocious than anything the artist has done in years. But Black's command of the pop form is as crystalline as ever, too, as the shiny melody of "Half Man" proves. There are references here to Cuchulainn, a figure from Irish mythology, but any conceptual strain takes a back seat to the smart, irresistible rock offered up by one of alternative rock's true legends.
