Plateau: Phil Western, Cevin Key (keyboards, programming).
Additional personnel: Karin (vocals).
Recorded at Subconscious Studios, Hollywood, California.
Since the demise of Skinny Puppy, Cevin Key has been involved in a number of interesting side projects and associations (including Download). But it is as Plateau that Key, joined by partner Philth, has recorded some of the finest electronica of his career. Plateau travels far beyond the boundaries of industrial music, reaping the rewards of such electronica mavens as Autechre, B12, and Richard Kirk along the way, while absorbing the post-industrial moves of folks like Zoviet France and former Throbbing Gristle mainman Chris Carter.
SPACECAKE may have been lost in the 1999 shuffle, but it's an album worth looking up. You'll be rewarded with something strange, stroboscopic, and wild. Tracks such as "Creature" and "Satchel" toss genre conventions such as techno and downtempo into the proverbial blender, yielding evolutionary follow-up stages in the process. Plateau's bundle of alien-warped sounds and noises seems to have been wrenched from equipment not made of this world. Perhaps epitomized in the engaging "cosmosmusic" of the title track, with its pinging booster rockets and awry beats, Key and his Plateau project may just be electronica's best kept secret.
