THE SEA AND CAKE is the debut from Chicagoan Sam Prekop's pioneering post-rock band. Prekop previously led Shrimp Boat and has since released a solo album. This quartet includes Coctails member Archer Prewitt on guitar and keyboards and Tortoise's John McEntire on drums and keyboards. The Sea and Cake's quietly propulsive songs are at once melodic and hypnotic, the arrangements spare, but the band is not to be dismissed as minimalist.
Very real tensions tie the vocals with the interlocking guitars. The album has a DIY feel, but The Sea and Cake is far removed from the garage or lo-fi band/production aesthetic. A song such as "Flat Lay The Water" is compellingly poetic, its chiming guitars and elusive lyrics darting in and out of the music like fishes. This auspicious debut record paved the way for several rapidly released and equally fine follow-up albums, including NASSAU and THE BIZ.
