How not to reissue important music: Put together a somewhat random sampler made out of three former Lp's, do not give the proper recording dates or any hint as to who the sidemen are and have brief and meaningless liner notes. The music on this CD, which matches Louis Armstrong with the Dukes Of Dixieland (a particularly strong group which had the frontline of trumpeter Frank Assunto, trombonist Fred Assunto and clarinetist Jerry Fuller) includes 14 of the 27 titles that resulted from the sessions (leaving out the 15 alternate takes). The interplay between Armstrong and the other players (particularly trumpeter Assunto) is often quite exciting and full of mutual respect and love; the Dukes were thrilled to get the chance to play with Satch. Among the highlights are a tremendous version of "Avalon," "Sweethearts On Parade," "Bourbon Street Parade" and a definitive "Back O' Town Blues." It is a pity that the packaging is so negligent; listeners who already have the Audio Fidelity Lps are advised to keep those instead. ~ Scott Yanow
