The Spinanes: Rebecca Gates (vocals, guitar); Scott Plouf (drums).
Recorded at Am Rep Recording Division, Minneapolis, Minnesota.
In the '90s tradition of House of Freaks, Flat Duo Jets and early Ani DiFranco, the Spinanes' MANOS works brilliantly with the simplest of tools: Rebecca Gates' expressive voice and inventive guitar work and Scott Plouf's straightforward drumming. Unlike the aforementioned artists, however, Gates and Plouf rarely sound Spartan or jagged. One exception is "Noel, Jonah and Me," where the rough edges are obviously a deliberate aesthetic choice. Beginning with a lovely Gates solo acoustic song called "Entire," MANOS charts a varied course, from the aggressive "Spitfire" to the Velvet Underground-like title track and the lush "Epiphany" to the catchy, chiming "Grand Prize." Later Spinanes albums moved away from this bare-bones guitar-and-drums format, but MANOS is a brilliant expression of the power of the two-person line-up.
