1976's JOAN ARMATRADING is the West Indies-born, Birmingham-reared singer's third album, but it's widely considered her first truly great work, after the tentative experiments of 1972's WHATEVER'S FOR US and 1975's BACK TO THE NIGHT. New producer Glyn Johns brought in a simpler sound than his predecessor Gus Dudgeon had favored. The selection of current and former members of Fairport Convention, particularly powerhouse drummer Dave Mattacks, emphasizes Armatrading's folk roots. The singer-songwriter scored with the hit "Love and Affection," and most of the rest of the album, particularly "Water with the Wine" and the affectionate "Somebody Who Loves You," is nearly up to the level of that classic single. Less poppy than some of her later albums, but intensely satisfying.
