Silkworm is not one of those indie rock bands one can easily pigeonhole, or for that matter forget. Like Pavement, they present lyrics running the gamut from the absurdly prescient to the simply absurd, sung in a lilting, off-key style (although Andy Cohen's vocals eminate from a darker and grittier world than the higher-pitched Mr. Malkmus). Dissonant guitars crescendo into melodies before breaking into chaos. However, Silkworm has always presented a more varied sound than their higher-profile brethren and generally seems a bit less studied.
Seventh offerring ITALIAN PLATINUM finds the Seattle-based threesome sounding as vigorous and gin-soaked as ever. From the catchy opening track's refrain "I love you means I hope you don't survive the night" to the final track's bon mot "tobacco's a help because it clears the mind/but like all your friends, it's vilified," obtuse and oblique lyrics abound, occasionally confound, but certainly never bore. There's even a somewhat divine moment when singer/songwriter Kelly Hogan guests on the affecting blues-country ballad "Young." ITALIAN PLATINUM stands as one of the more diverse and enjoyable installments in indie stalwarts Silkworm's distinctive discography.
