Coming off their biggest hit in years with the 1976 album THE ROARING SILENCE (and its monster hit single a version of Springsteen's "Blinded By the Light), Manfred Mann decided to continue in the same musical direction with their next release two years later, 1978's WATCH. Present again is the synthesizer-laden pop rock with a progressive edge, but noticeably absent was another overhaul of a Springsteen tune. Still, WATCH was a big hit in the band's native England, highlighted by the top 10 UK single "Davy's on the Road Again." Also included were such other prog-pop highlights as the album-opening one-two punch of "Circles" and "Drowning on Dry Land/Fish Soup." Along with THE ROARING SILENCE, WATCH remains one of Manfred Mann's strongest releases of the '70s.
