Brooklyn's Vivian Girls became underground overnight sensations in part on the strength of their delightful debut self-titled LP. Originally released on a tiny Brooklyn indie label in 2008, the album was re-released by the long-running In the Red label later that year. Consisting of 10 songs clocking in at just over 20 minutes, the album is a wallop of jangly, DIY pop-punk. Recalling K Records bands such as Tiger Trap and the Softies as well as British twee outfits like the Talulah Gosh and the Shop Assistants, the Vivian Girls play endearingly simple pop songs that enchant with lovely harmonies, but have just enough grit and punch to avoid being precious. While the VG's don't give themselves a lot of room to move here, they'd be perfectly ok just staying put too.
