This is the second of two Blind Willie Johnson albums released by Yazoo.
Includes liner notes by David Evans.
Until Columbia/Legacy released its comprehensive COMPLETE RECORDINGS OF BLIND WILLIE JOHNSON, Yazoo's fine SWEETER AS THE YEARS GO BY and its companion disc, PRAISE GOD I'M SATISFIED, provided the only collection of this slide master's harrowing gospel blues. SWEETER initially packaged all the tracks not included on the "greatest hits" collection PRAISE GOD. To assume that SWEETER is an inferior collection, however, would be a serious mistake.
Johnson sings in a raspy bass voice, often accompanied by a female vocalist, as well as by his remarkable, contrapuntal slide guitar playing. His songs are evangelical in content. Some (such as "Lord, I Just Can't Keep From Crying" and "If I Had My Way I'd Tear This Building Down") conform to a standard blues format, but others, like the title track and "If It Had Not Been For Jesus," are more melodic and folky. All are performed with the skill of a virtuoso and the fervor of a true believer, resulting in some of the most extraordinary and distinctive music the blues has to offer.
