Blue Rodeo: Jim Cuddy, Greg Keelor (vocals, guitar); Bobby Wiseman (piano, acetone); Bazil Donovan (bass); Cleave Anderson (drums).
The first album by Toronto's Blue Rodeo suggests what would happen if one of the Paisley Underground bands of early '80s California--say, Opal or the Dream Syndicate--had gone from their psychedelic influences into a deep examination of MUSIC FROM BIG PINK and the orchestral folk-rock of Neil Young's self-titled solo debut.
Jim Cuddy and Greg Keelor write--separately--songs which lean slightly towards folk and country influences, but while later records would display a much more overt country flavor, these ten tracks are electro-acoustic pop songs along the lines of the Buffalo Springfield or late-period Byrds. The closing "Floating" is probably the album's best track, but none of the nine which precede it are in any way weak. It's easy to play spot-the-influence in places, but even at this early stage, Blue Rodeo show their strengths.
