Jan Jelinek is a Berlin-based electronic musician who has become one of the leading lights of post-digital experimentation in the 2000s. Taking a structuralist approach to sample-based composition, Jelinek dissects loops down to their component digital ones-and-zeros, uncovering the latent musical possibilities within the discarded sonic detritus. LOOP FINDING JAZZ RECORDS, released in 2001 at the height of electronica's commercial boom, takes a relatively austere approach in its use of jazz and soul recordings of the `60s and `70s. Using a technique that he likens to the visual moiré effect created by overlapping patterns, Jelinek applies short, one-second instrumental snippets of organs, pianos, and strings to the "loop-finding" function of his sampler, teasing out hypnotic, gently modulating pulses nestled by the randomly firing fissures of clicking micro-rhythms.
