If you like your alterna-ska more original and experimental than the majority of the genre's other bands, it's a safe bet you'll appreciate King Changó's self-titled debut. Mixing its ska with Latin sounds and singing in several different languages, the large band should be given credit for trying new musical approaches. King Changó have no problem creating a party-like atmosphere with their music, and they don't limit themselves to just one style. Vibrant performances abound, but the true standouts include the adrenaline rush of the opening track, "Don't Drop Your Pants"; the Spanish rock of "Confesión" and "Latin Ska"; and the laid-back groove of the closing "French Lady." The short instrumental "African Fever" contains interesting rhythms and band interplay, while "God Damn Killers" is a liquid-sounding dub. You may be tempted to lump King Changó in with all of the other late-'90s ska bands, but after listening to their debut, you'll undoubtedly think otherwise. ~ Greg Prato
