Digital hardcore advocate Kid 606 continues his assault on ears with his 2008 EP DIE SOUNDBOY DIE. On one hand, the relentlessly driving 4/4 beats and bleating samples make Kid 606 a throwback to the golden days of rave. But there's a 21st-century intelligence at work here too, as heard in the carefully sculpted, whiplash breakbeats and the layered, mind-bending loops.
With its burbling bass line and unpredictable sample bag, "Getranke Nasty" is a case in point, as is the funky bass synth and pastiche of R&B vocals in "You All Break My Heart." Kid 606 throws in industrial, glitch, and everything but the kitchen sink, but manages it all with consummate craft and a healthy, punky attitude.
