In 2008, Fat Possum re-released an album by the mysterious Famous L. Renfroe that originally appeared in 1969. It paradoxically sounds both of its time and timeless; it holds the same shoddy charm of an Alan Lomax field recording, while the soulful backup singers and funk beats place it firmly in the late 1960s. Renfroe's exceptional music finds the continuity between delta blues and contemporary R&B, executed with an ease and a wistfulness that makes you wonder why it took so long for the record to be rescued from the depths of obscurity.
