Bassist Henry Grimes was a talented and versatile musician who played as a sideman on numerous recordings during the late 1950 and `60s. Grimes shone in swing, bop, and post-bop contexts, but was moving into more avant-garde territory throughout the mid `60s before dropping out of the jazz scene altogether in 1967. THE CALL, Grimes's only session as a leader, was recorded in 1965 during this period. Alongside clarinetist Perry Robinson and drummer Tom Price, Grimes delivers six originals that provide plenty of space for all three musicians to stretch out. Re-released in 2008, the challenging, mesmerizing THE CALL will prove a treat for `60s free jazz fans.
