Amour

The third album by Barcelona-based techno musician Juan Rico under his Architectural alias is one of his most dreamy, hypnotic releases yet. While most of the tracks have propulsive beats, they're more about building atmospheres and slowly fading elements in and out of the mix. The tracks generally feature droning synth pads that wash over the beat, and "Lacrimosa" adds sly melodic soloing. On the album's ten-minute title track, he takes his sweet time to build up a suspenseful aura, with the beat kicking in only after about six minutes. Other tracks feel like stopping to stare at a gorgeous sunrise or sunset, with a beat attached. Recommended for fans of Kompakt's ambient techno releases. ~ Paul Simpson
