Principally recorded at Shipton Manor, Oxon, England and St. Giles Church, London, England.
John Cale's second album stands in great contrast to his first, VINTAGE VIOLENCE. His debut had been a bit of a popish and tuneful surprise, coming as it did on the heels of his work with the Velvet Underground. What followed that album was a collaborative effort, CHURCH OF ANTHRAX, created with minimalist composer Terry Riley. THE ACADEMY IN PERIL was his true sophomore solo release.
The collection sets aside Cale's interest in vocal songs for music that draws upon his extensive background in avant garde classical music. The eight pieces range from symphonic arrangements (that feature the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra) to solo piano compositions, string ensemble pieces spiked by fragmentary and humorously surreal narration, and soundtrack-like instrumental compositions. This album, along with his previous works, make clear the breadth of Cale's musical imagination and sensibilities. While modernist and decidedly non-pop, this is not difficult music, and one is able to be drawn into it with ease.
