Canadian singer-songwriter Dan Bejar may be best known to some for playing with power-poppers the New Pornographers, but his own project, Destroyer, is where he expresses his vision to the fullest. Destroyer had already made four albums of off-kilter, Bowie-influenced indie rock before STREETHAWK: A SEDUCTION, but recording for a slightly larger label and expanding his vision just a bit gained Bejar more renown than ever before.
Destroyer's music began to take on a greater scope here, mixing glam-rock, lo-fi indie-pop, and a vaguely decadent, almost cabaret-like flavor a la Lou Reed's Berlin (though never as bleak). Sometimes STREETHAWK finds Bejar camping it up like a half-pint rock god with an abundance of attitude, and sometimes he's the introspective balladeer delivering poetic plaints atop acoustic guitar or plinking piano, but it's all of a piece, and it adds up to one of Destroyer's definitive recorded statements.
