Robert Pollard's first "official" solo album since the final Guided by Voices tour (he'll probably turn out several more before you finish reading this review) is a sprawling, double-album-length affair that boasts the singer/songwriter's strengths and liabilities in spades. FROM A COMPOUND EYE does little to break Pollard's or GBV's classic paradigm: it is packed with short blasts of song ideas that are long on invention and short on development or coherence.
That Pollard hasn't re-written his own rule book by this late date might be grounds for criticism, but those who love the man's idiosyncratic style, homages to British Invasion pop, cryptic, surreal wordplay, and infallible knack for a hook will find much to love. FROM A COMPOUND EYE rewards more than it frustrates, and proves this perennial indie hero is far from running out of ideas.
