Crowbar: Kirk Windstein (vocals, guitar); Matt Thomas (guitar); Todd Strange (bass); Craig Nunenmacher (drums).
Recorded at HT Studios, Chalmette, Louisiana. Originally released on Pavement Music (5000).
While its pre-Katrina reputation was that of the ultimate party town, New Orleans has always concealed a formidable dark side. How else can one explain the proliferation of dark, sludgy bands like Crowbar and Eyehategod swimming in the gumbo like nuggets of coal? Crowbar's 1993 second album is a sludge metal landmark of punishing riffs and molasses-slow tempos. The band's hardcore punk past adds industrial-strength brawn to their doom-metal structures, and singer Kirk Windstein's vein-busting growl matches the music's intensity. "All I Had (I Gave)" is a barrage of brutal guitars and clenched-fist rhythm section, and "Existence Is Punishment" is a slow, agonizing crawl that suits its title.
