Chicago's Submarine Races make the sort of simple, urgent garage pop that is nearly impossible to resist even if it never changes the world. Their self-titled 2006 debut combines elements of Velvet Underground-style primitivism with the jangliest of DIY pop, and has just enough of a punk sneer to keep things sounding tough. The band isn't above being clever, either, having written what may be the most succinct and catchy put-down to elder-generational nostalgia with "Hey Dad the War is Over."
