Ultra-prolific spell-caster Rob Crow's third studio album under the Goblin Cock moniker, Necronomidonkeykongimicon is worth recommending for the name alone, but it's hardly bereft of substance. The hooded necromancer wielding a B.C. Rich Warlock guitar that adorns the cover doesn't help matters, especially for listeners who might be new to the offbeat doom/power metal project, but Crow's take on the genre is so multifaceted and unpredictable that it ultimately transcends its more absurdist tendencies. A mélange of face-melting riffage and left-field melodic turns, Necronomidonkeykongimicon spills forth from a viscera-stained tackle box brimming with hooks, effectively pairing fiery punk and sludge metal might with crafty alt-rock choruses, sounding for all the world like what Redd Kross may have unleashed had they been raised on Sabbath instead of Cheap Trick. ~ James Christopher Monger
