Hera Ma Nono

Bi-continental funk unit Extra Golden released their sophomore album, HEAR MA NONO, on Thrill Jockey in 2007. The outfit comprises members of the American indie rock band Golden and leading members of Kenya's benga music scene--most notably drummer Onyango Wuod Omari and revered vocalist Opiyo Bilongo (who replaced the late group's founder, Otieno Jagwasi, after his 2005 death).
Omari's lithe, robust drumming intertwines seamlessly with guitarists Alex Minoff and Eric Eagleson's nimble, syncopated lines, and both Omari and Bilongo's voices soar to joyful heights throughout. (Also, David Egan's occasional piano provides an unexpected treat, particularly on album opener "Jakolando.") Though a curiosity in terms of its union of seemingly disconnected musicians and styles, HEAR MA NONO is above all a vibrant and uplifting listening experience.
