Personnel: Jackie McLean (alto saxophone); Freddie Hubbard (trumpet); Kenny Drew (piano); Doug Watkins (bass); Pete La Roca (drums).
Recorded at the Van Gelder Studio, Englewood Cliffs, New Jersey on January 8, 1961. Includes liner notes by Ira Gitler.
Alto saxophonist Jackie McLean was and remains one of the most distinctive of Charlie Parker's acolytes, with a dissonant, bittersweet tone that was his alone. McLean was also among the 1950s hard boppers that favorably took to the avant-garde innovations of Ornette Coleman and Cecil Taylor. On 1961's BLUESNIK, however, McLean is still tilling bop soil, though some small free influences were seeping in. Featuring greats Freddie Hubbard (trumpet) and Kenny Drew (piano), BLUESNIK is a blazing, straight-ahead set of originals with strong blues overtones. Hubbard is relatively restrained here compared to the fiery heights he'd attain a few years on, McLean is at his blues-charged best, and Doug Watkins and Pete La Roca swing urgently.
