Personnel: Hasil Adkins (vocals, guitar, harmonica, drums); Bob Hoffnar (pedal steel guitar); Lars Espensen (saxophone).
Recorded at Coyote Studios, Brooklyn, New York. Includes liner notes by Hasil Adkins.
With an album title that blows a well-deserved raspberry at what passed for mainstream country music in the early '90s, Hasil Adkins' ACHY BREAKY HA HA HA shows folks like Billy Ray Cyrus how real country is done. Although somewhat restrained in comparison to some of the West Virginia wildman's near-feral rockabilly records, this 15-track album-recorded in Brooklyn, of all places--is still wilder and rowdier than anything that came out of Nashville in 1994.
Mixing honky-tonk originals like "Put My Guitar Away, Mommy" with respectful but rip-snorting covers like George Jones' classic "She Thinks I Still Care," Adkins returns country music to its down-home roots. Backed only with Bob Hoffnar's weepy pedal steel and Lars Espensen's honking saxophone, Adkins sings and plays with manic intensity. ACHY BREAKY HA HA HA is one of the most exciting pure country albums of the '90s.
