The almost-famous rattle and hum of Markus Popp's Oval has begotten countless imitators (Ultra Vivid Scene's Kurt Ralske among them.) Like My Bloody Valentine's influential "Loveless," Oval's sound is thoroughly engaging ambient music, a haunting combination of noise and melody. It's the sound of your computer's disk drive singing itself to sleep.
"Ovalprocess" is also the name of Popp's own software that's used to create his recordings. This software formed the centerpiece of his sound installation, "Skotodesk," where us ordinary grunts could experience the wonders of creating our own Oval-esque recordings. Alas, the closest that most of us will ever come to that will be buying this beautiful CD.
