Abandoning the twee indie pop of their debut album for a more fragmented and experimental sound reminiscent of Deerhoof at their most whimsically deranged, Vancouver's Shapes and Sizes completely reinvent themselves for their second album. With singer Caila Thompson-Hannat taking a more prominent role than before, and the arrangements expanding to include everything from the delicate, Brian Wilson-like banjos of "The Taste In My Mouth" to the jarring noise rock of "Highlife," SPLIT LIPS, WINNING HIPS, A SHINER is a peculiar delight.
