East Side Story, Vol. 5

It may not contain many big hits, but that's the reason why East Side Story, Vol. 5 is a wonderful collection of '60s R&B and soul. Brenton Wood is the most familiar name here, but he's represented by lesser-known singles like "Baby, You Got It" and "Me & You" -- which are very close to being as good as his hits. And that's the key to this disc and the whole East Side Story series. The compilers have found a number of great obscurities that sound new and exciting. Yes, some of the featured songs aren't as sublime as the acknowledged classics, but there's not a loser in the bunch and it's enjoyable from beginning to end. It's a great choice, not only for Northern Soul and Uptown soul fanatics, but for old-school soul, pop, and R&B fans looking for something that sounds familiar, but feels fresh. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine
