Back in her native Louisiana on April 11, 1976, at the New Orleans Fairgrounds (featuring Lightnin’ Hopkins, Ernie K-Doe and Professor Longhair), Thomas radiated southern warmth, drawing audiences into her world and making them glad they came. It’s easy to hear how she is completely at home onstage, and her manner has a casual ease and humour that is instantly engaging. Allen Toussaint’s presence cannot be understated here, especially as he was responsible for her Minit contract and a large part of Thomas’ catalog such as the timeless ‘Ruler Of My Heart’. Thomas’ sense of pacing and rhythmic invention on this particular version spells the essence of soul. She could always find a surprising way to phrase against the pulse of the rhythm section, and the sheer emotional impact of her technique ultimately stamped her as a true product of the New Orleans music world, as the “Soul Queen of New Orleans.”

Irma Thomas with Tommy Ridgley’s New Orleans band. Recorded live at the New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival, April 1976. This exclusive pressing is a limited edition and only available through InnerSleeve.
