The Upsetters: Reggie (guitar); Gladson Anderson (piano); Winston Wright, Glen Adams (organ); Carlton Barrett (drums); Lee Perry, Scully (percussion).
Arguably the first true dub album to hit the streets, this tour de force from Lee "Scratch" Perry and his Upsetters is an essential record for any reggae fan. BLACKBOARD JUNGLE DUB combines the talents of Perry, one of Jamaica's most innovative producers, with those of King Tubby-the engineer credited with inventing the dub form. Together, the duo deconstructs Perry's best productions of the era-including three Wailers songs ("Kaya," "Keep On Moving," and "Dreamland")-and refashions them as some of the most mind-blowing dub in history.
The musicians on board (including the Barrett brothers and Earl "Chinna" Smith) provide a deep and solid groove that acts as a foundation for Tubby & Perry's more experimental moments. BLACKBOARD also features appearances by Dillinger and I-Roy. But the genius of this album is in the mixing itself, with layers of early delay effects, instruments dropping in and out, horns dripping with reverb, and alien sounds coming out of nowhere to startle and soothe. Put this disc on, turn up the volume, and you'll soon understand why producers like the Beastie Boys have been worshipping Perry for years.
