everything-for-the-first-time
Everything for the First Time
Big Midnight: Shea Roberts (vocals, guitar, keyboards, percussion); Elisha Drons (guitar); Chris Beltran (harmonica, keyboards, bass); Jimmy Willets (Fender Rhodes piano); KC Kozak (drums, background vocals); Lydia Walker (background vocals).
Recorded at Studio 880, Oakland, California.
A re-configuration of retro-sounding San Francisco band Richmond Sluts, Big Midnight mines much of the same bluesy garage-rock territory as its predecessor, but with an emphasis on EXILE ON MAIN STREET-era Rolling Stones-isms. EVERYTHING FOR THE FIRST TIME differentiates itself from many similar-sounding modern records with the inclusion of a pair of melancholy ballads: "All My Dreams" features smooth Fender Rhodes electric piano, while the acoustic guitar-driven "Spent Too Much" sounds like T. Rex's Marc Bolan trying his hand at the Stones' "Angie." Throughout, vocalist Shea Roberts has Iggy Pop's druggy swagger and vocal timbre down pat, but his inflections often also recall David Johanson and the Cult's Ian Astbury. Overall, EVERYTHING FOR THE FIRST TIME is a good-time record that does a fine job of celebrating its influences without ever descending into academic copycat-ism.
//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0612/6007/1077/files/146a758499db70ab046a67b4e947bf6b_47afc6f8-91da-414f-8147-ebe5dde90421.jpg?v=1777757010
